Sometimes our compass can be quite unexpected.
00:02
Like our boy Hermit who loves Latino culture through food,
00:06
music, and the people.
00:08
I love how his content brings people together.
00:10
It's yeah, let's put you on.
00:12
Welcome to Me Too Daily,
00:13
Hermit. Hi. It's so nice to be here.
00:18
Thank you for bringing me on.
00:20
Oh, it's nice to finally meet you.
00:22
Seeing you through all over TikTok.
00:23
It's honestly your content is so wholesome.
00:26
We love it. We're big fans.
00:27
Thank you. That means a lot.
00:28
And I wanted to ask you,
00:29
how did you first become interested in Mexican and Latino culture?
00:33
At first I started through,
00:35
video game streaming.
00:37
I worked my way up from streaming on my phone until I
00:42
worked until I had a PC.
00:43
I had little knowledge about video editing.
00:46
And I knew that,
00:47
doing reaction content was extremely easy to do.
00:51
So I was just checking out,
00:54
hip hop and stuff like that,
00:55
doing,, music reactions.
00:58
And very quickly I was led to Houston.
01:01
And,, through samples from some of the Houston hip
01:05
hop artists, I learned of cumbia.
01:08
Oh. With a song like this,
01:11
the party never quits.
01:13
Yeah I fell in love with the music and the people were
01:20
leaving such beautiful comments when people are so kind to you,
01:24
you can't help but be kind back to them.
01:27
And I've always appreciated other,
01:30
cultures. I learned how beautiful and vibrant and everything
01:35
about,, particularly Mexico's culture.
01:37
I, I fell,
01:38
I fell in love,
01:39
especially with the people because everybody's so kind.
01:41
Yeah, and you know what it's like I feel like when
01:44
we see someone appreciate the culture we're like,
01:46
oh that's so genuine.
01:47
They're like, that's so cute.
01:48
Like I love it like I love how much they're loving it
01:51
you know what I mean because people are quick to
01:54
like,,,
01:55
you know, on social media people could be mean sometimes to
01:57
or. Or they go in and be like,
01:59
oh, he's appropriating.
02:01
No, he's appreciating.
02:03
There's a difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation,
02:08
and I feel you're the prime example of cultural appreciation.
02:11
When I first started,
02:12
I got that a lot.
02:13
The appropriation versus appreciation.
02:17
And I just, I just.
02:20
You know, slide off my back and I just kept doing
02:22
what I was doing because the vast majority,
02:24
it was only like 5% negativity.
02:27
And how do you make sure you're embracing Mexican and Latin cultures
02:30
respectfully? Big thing is to surround myself with people who are
02:34
knowledgeable, wise people surround themselves with smart people when they're not
02:38
educated. Some,,
02:41
personal friends, Carlos,
02:42
Jose,, they are very in tune with indigenous and
02:47
Chicano cultures and stuff.
02:49
They tell me what's respectful,
02:51
what's disrespectful, so I,
02:52
I try to always educate myself and do my research beforehand.
02:56
And I remember your reaction videos early on,
02:57
like, I think you're trying a quesa via or something.
03:00
Like, was it Mexican dish and like how did you discover
03:03
it? Pillaquiles are phenomenal.
03:07
I eat breakfast, lunch,
03:08
or dinner, it doesn't matter.
03:09
I love them. Red or green?
03:11
I'll, I'll take either.
03:12
I prefer green because green tends to be a little spicier in
03:15
Michigan, but out in California,
03:16
red was definitely spicier.
03:19
Damn. And who are your favorite Latino actors,
03:22
actresses, comedians? or music artists.
03:26
I get names wrong a lot,
03:27
so I apologize if I pronounce any names wrong.
03:30
Fido Olivarez, I,
03:32
I love him. He's one of the first cumbia artists I
03:35
started doing reactions to.
03:36
I love how he plays the saxophone.
03:38
The first song I listened to by him was through a sample
03:42
raw by that Mexican OT,
03:44
and I, I checked out Cumbia de la Cobra and Oh
03:48
dude, that it was done.
03:50
It was done. He has so many.
03:52
Rest in peace. So bangers.
03:56
I actually had a video go viral around the time he passed
03:59
away and his family reached out to me and they sent
04:02
me a letter, they sent me a CD.
04:04
I still have the CD right here actually.
04:07
I have it sealed.
04:08
Oh, here's the letter too.
04:11
Oh, that's so dope.
04:12
Power of the internet.
04:14
It's not all bad.
04:15
There's some good. I was told that I have the taste
04:19
of an older woman when it comes to music.
04:22
When people come into my live streams,
04:24
they're like, oh,
04:25
I'm ready to clean the house.
04:26
It's like Saturday morning.
04:30
That's what I'm gonna playlist classic like that.
04:32
Well, he's definitely gonna marry a Latina for sure,
04:35
right? Are you gonna are you gonna marry a Latina?
04:38
I don't know if my girlfriend would approve of.
04:42
But once again, Hermit,
04:43
thank you so much.
04:44
Before I let you go,
04:45
what's your at so people can find you?
04:46
I go by Hermit on most platforms.
04:48
I go on Herm Eats on YouTube.
04:50
Nice. Thank you so much.
04:53
Thank you, thank you for having me.
04:55
I appreciate it. Thank you,
04:56

04:58
