00:00
Hi, me too,
00:00
fam. Today we're talking beauty secrets,
00:03
healthy skin, and the changes that happen as we age.
00:06
We're chatting with my queen,
00:08
renowned makeup artist Priscilla Ono,
00:12
because today we're asking for an Amika.
00:15
Hi everyone. I'm so excited to be here.
00:18
Thank you so much for having me.
00:20
Thank you so much for joining us.
00:21
I'm so excited. OK,
00:23
so makeup for me has pretty much been present in my life
00:27
for a while. I was pretty young when I started dabbling
00:30
I was a theater kid,
00:32
so it just was part of the theater kid lifestyle.
00:37
I have to ask for you,
00:38
while growing up, did you always think of makeup as a
00:41
way to express yourself and eventually make it your your career and
00:45
work? Absolutely. You know,
00:47
makeup has always been an escapism for me.
00:49
It's always been something artistic,
00:51
something that I grew up watching,
00:53
you know, my tia is my mom.
00:56
I call her a mom,
00:56
that's my grandma. My Ama,
00:59
they love makeup. As a child,
01:02
I remember stealing my Ama's makeup bag and locking myself in her
01:06
bathroom, doing a full face of makeup,
01:08
washing it off and then coming out like nothing happened.
01:11
I just always loved it.
01:13
It's always been in my life.
01:14
I grew up watching it.
01:16
I was raised actually by my grandmother,
01:18
and she's first generation from Mexico.
01:21
And it was really hard for her to let me do something
01:24
artistic with my career.
01:26
I actually didn't have a,
01:28
a choice. She made a choice for me.
01:30
She actually was like,
01:32
You're going to be in the medical field.
01:33
That's what you're going to do,
01:35
you know? And so when I decided to be a makeup
01:37
artist, it actually was a little hard for her,
01:39
but it was like my mission to show her like,
01:41
No, I can be successful even as an artist.
01:43
But,, I do have to say she was always
01:45
my muse and I always tell her that.
01:47
So I'm like, even though you don't want me to do
01:48
it at first, now she's super proud of me.
01:51
but I do tell her,
01:52
You're my muse, you're the.
01:53
The reason why I'm doing this,
01:54
I always looked up to you and how beautiful you had your
01:57
makeup and it was always something that inspired me.
02:00
So yeah, it's been in my life since a child.
02:03
I love that your abuelita has,
02:06
although it didn't start,
02:07
you know, fully supportive,
02:09
she's been crucial and important to kind of this journey of yours
02:13
Priscilla, you've worked with a lot of brands.
02:16
How has working with them changed your view on beauty and inclusivity
02:20
for everyone? Oh my God,
02:22
working with all these brands,
02:24
especially right now in the present moment that we're in,
02:26
where a lot of brands are so much more aware of being
02:30
inclusive when it comes to everything from your background where you come
02:34
from,, to your skin tone,
02:37
to your skin type.
02:39
it's something that actually is very rewarding for me to
02:43
work with brands that are aware of things like that.
02:46
I love my partnership that I have with Ponds currently.
02:49
I feel like they are very inclusive when it comes to making
02:52
sure that everyone is seen and heard,
02:54
especially with your skin needs,
02:56
and it's so special to me.
02:57
I love working. With brands that I actually have a connection
03:00
with, and I actually won't work with a brand unless I
03:03
have some type of connection.
03:04
It has to be something.
03:06
So, how has your Mexican background influenced your style of makeup
03:09
So much. I mean,
03:11
just growing up like watching my Tias with the darker lip liners
03:14
and the the the thin brows and I,
03:18
I think I, I pretty much rely on all of that
03:22
influence in the makeup that I do today,
03:24
especially right now, there's such a big trend with like darker
03:28
lip liner and like a lighter lip,
03:30
like a 90s nude lip.
03:31
And I feel like I am a pro at it now because
03:34
I've been doing it for so many years since I was a
03:36
kid. You know,
03:37
having like these, you know,
03:39
my Mexican background growing up in Los Angeles with,
03:42
you know, my family and even when I went to school
03:45
like, I grew up.
03:46
With all brown and black people.
03:47
So I definitely know what it's like like for like these trendy
03:52
like now, darker lip liner,
03:54
thin brows, like that was like the style and it still
03:58
is today, and I love that.
03:59
I love that everything kind of comes around full circle.
04:03
You're like, I've been doing that.
04:05
Let me teach you.
04:07
Yeah, exactly. And how do you think the beauty industry
04:11
in general helps women of color feel more confident and beautiful?
04:15
By giving them their options,
04:18
by giving them their shades,
04:20
their tones, I think that the beauty industry right now is
04:23
very open ears and aware that now we have to make sure
04:27
that we're paying attention to what is needed because that's at the
04:32
end of the day is going to give them more sales.
04:34
So that's a win-win for everybody.
04:35
So comment on those posts on on the makeup brands and the
04:39
skincare brands, like.
04:41
those comments because they're listening,
04:42
they're watching. They're reading and they have a team just designated
04:48
to see like, OK,
04:49
what are they asking for?
04:50
We need to come out with that,
04:51
you know. I have to ask lastly,
04:54
who is a fierce woman who has mentored or inspired you in
04:59
your life? I have so many,
05:00
but I have to say it's Maya Mala.
05:03
She definitely gave me my first.
05:07
Boost of confidence when it came to being a Latina.
05:11
She always told me,
05:12
you're a woman, you're a Latina,
05:14
you have to work extra hard because you're both of those things
05:18
I feel like because I had that in my head again
05:19
I worked my butt off and that's why I think I
05:21
am where I am now is because People can see that I
05:25
have a good work ethic and then I'm very passionate about what
05:28
I do and it doesn't matter where you come from,
05:30
it doesn't matter your background.
05:31
It matters your heart and peer,
05:34
how much passion you put into something.
05:36
Absolutely. And you've worked with some like.
05:39
Really big stars and you get to work with them on their
05:44
makeup and look like I,
05:46
I believe Rihanna and Kali Uchis are some of your your clients
05:51
How does working with them inspire you and your career?
05:54
Oh my gosh, so much,
05:56
especially like Kali Uchis.
05:58
I actually just worked with her for Latin Grammys and she looked
06:01
beautiful, by the way.
06:02
Thank you so much.
06:03
She, she's a gorgeous girl and from the inside out and
06:06
just working with her.
06:08
It's great because, you know,
06:10
when they're sitting in the chair,
06:12
they're also sharing light with you.
06:14
They're also sharing their insight with their thinking,
06:16
their thoughts behind life and the way they,
06:19
you know, that they perceive life.
06:20
And Holly is such a light when it comes to just the
06:25
way she sees the world,
06:26
like in This positive way.
06:28
It's the internet can be brutal sometimes.
06:30
You know, you go online and not everyone's your friend and
06:33
not everybody wants to be your friend and they might be having
06:36
a bad day and they just want to ruin yours sometimes too
06:39
But Kali always has like this positive way of thinking about
06:42
things and like I think that for me that has inspired me
06:45
so much because it makes you feel like,
06:47
you know what? I don't matter what nobody says.
06:48
I'm gonna do me,
06:49
I'm gonna do it how I want to do it.
06:51
And I'm gonna be happy about the way I did it.
06:55
Thank you so much for everything you've shared with me,
06:57
truly. It was a wonderful conversation,
06:59
