October 3rd is Latina Equal Pay Day.
00:02
And to celebrate, we have Joanna Gonzalez,
00:05
financial educator, author and content creator to help empower us vouch
00:10
for ourselves and our finances.
00:12
Welcome Joanna. Thanks Daniela.
00:15
Thank you for having me.
00:15
Me too. Of course,
00:17
we're so happy to be speaking with you today.
00:19
So for those who don't know what is Latina Equal Pay Day
00:23
When did it start?
00:25
It started in 1996.
00:27
And just to note it is not a celebration.
00:29
It actually acknowledges the approximate day when Latinas earn the same as
00:34
white non Hispanic men made the previous year.
00:38
So essentially, it takes us almost two years to earn just
00:42
as much as our white male counterparts.
00:43
Did. You're right.
00:45
I'm not celebrating that.
00:46
Nope. So I feel like it's super ingrained in our culture
00:52
to kind of be grateful for what we have.
00:55
And like working somewhere is,
00:57
is a blessing. How can we protect ourselves from this mentality
01:02
financially and emotionally? Oh,
01:06
that one is tough.
01:07
And I think first,
01:08
it's important to acknowledge that those are our cultural values.
01:13
But if you want to advance in corporate America,
01:17
it's important to understand that that cultural value is not respected in
01:21
corporate America. The value that is in high regard is when
01:25
people self advocate, when people speak up and are able to
01:28
say the work that I'm doing is tying back to these business
01:31
goals. Therefore, I am valuable to this company and I
01:33
deserve more money so you can be grateful and you can also
01:38
aspire for more. They're not mutually exclusive.
01:40
What advice would you give a Latina who is maybe scared to
01:44
negotiate her salary or her pay or compensation?
01:48
First, I think it's important that we need to acknowledge that
01:52
it is scary to do things for a first time,
01:54
especially if we weren't taught to do it,
01:56
right. So the best way to get comfortable negotiating your salary
02:00
would be if you're taught by somebody who has been there before
02:04
like a mentor who can teach you the ropes if you
02:07
don't have a mentor,
02:08
I love linkedin as a platform where you can build your professional
02:12
network and possibly connect with the mentor there.
02:15
You can also follow thought leaders that talk about the specific topic
02:18
about salary negotiation skills.
02:20
And they also have linkedin learning courses where you can actually learn
02:23
the skills needed to advocate for yourself in the workplace and ask
02:26
for a raise going off on that.
02:28
I also feel like discussing one salary kind of a taboo topic
02:33
Do you have any advice on how we can kind of
02:35
open up this conversation about money and,
02:38
and normalize it. Yes,
02:41
I do have one trick that I love to share with my
02:44
followers on my social media community and that is to get people
02:48
when they're exiting the company.
02:50
So if they're exiting on good terms,
02:52
because they are going to a competitor or another company,
02:56
that's a great time to talk about their salary.
02:59
Sometimes when you work with them,
03:01
it might be too competitive.
03:02
But when they have 1 ft out the door,
03:03
they're like, oh,
03:04
who cares? I'm not going to work here anymore.
03:06
So the way that I like to approach the conversation,
03:09
especially with my male colleagues is by saying something like,
03:13
hey, you know,
03:14
in light of the Latina pay gap and to kind of reach
03:19
parody, are you open to having a discussion with me about
03:22
what your salary history has been with this company just so that
03:25
I can have more transparency about what's available with each role.
03:29
And anytime that I've tried that they have just like over,
03:33
shared over and this was my bonus this year and then I
03:37
got this raise the other year,
03:39
you know, so it's not just like this is my current
03:40
salary that I'm leaving,
03:41
but they will share the whole history and that can be one
03:44
way to get transparency around that.
03:46
And where can we follow and keep up on social media?
03:49
I know you mentioned you're super connected with your online community.
03:53
Yeah, so I am on linkedin.
03:56
You can find me under my name Giovanna Gonzalez.
03:59
I am also on Instagram.
04:00
My handle there is Gigi the first gen mentor on tiktok.
04:04
The handle is the first gen mentor and you can also check
04:08
out my book at your local library,
04:10
your local bookstore. It's called Cultura in Cash Lessons from the
04:13
first gen mentor for managing finances and cultural expectations.
04:16
It was endorsed by Eva Longoria,
04:19
Mira Ka and Cash.
04:23
I love that. That is,
04:24
that is bad ass,
04:25
excuse my language. Thank you.
04:29
Well, thank you so much.
04:30
This is such a powerful conversation so I really appreciate it.
04:34
It was so nice to meet you.
04:35
Thanks for having me,
04:36
Daniella. Thank you.
