Welcome back to La Vota.
00:05
We've been covering issues that are important in this election.
00:08
And today we're talking about gun violence right now.
00:11
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for Children in America
00:14
Last week, we asked our audience to send us any
00:16
personal stories about how gun violence has affected them.
00:18
Kimberly Rubio told us her story and we like to share it
00:21
with you. My name is Kimberly Rubio.
00:26
And my 10 year old daughter,
00:27
Lexi was watching a movie at Rob Elementary in Uvalde Texas when
00:33
an 18 year old armed with an assault weapon,
00:35
walked into her school and murdered her 18 classmates and two teachers
00:41
On the morning of her death,
00:42
Lexi received the Good Citizen Award.
00:45
We celebrated what would have been Lexi's 13th birthday on Sunday at
00:50
the cemetery leaving her that night was probably the hardest.
01:00
Goodbye since the day we buried her.
01:04
I think the first year you're really numb,
01:08
but the second year it's just all coming to and it's so
01:13
difficult to process that.
01:15
We're never going to see her again.
01:17
We're never gonna hear her.
01:19
I wonder what she would be interested in now,
01:23
who her friends would be if she would have played volleyball.
01:26
Like she always wanted to when she got to seventh grade,
01:32
most interested in how she would have reacted to this campaign.
01:36
Because I can remember when Biden defeated Donald Trump,
01:43
we were in Conan and walking along the river and I snapped
01:49
a photo of my three daughters and I remember tagging it as
01:52
the futurist female because they were so excited to see the first
01:57
ever vice president be a woman.
01:59
And I know that I know when Kamala Harris wins,
02:05
I'll be out there at her gravesite telling her all about it
02:09
Now, today we're looking to have Kimberly on the line
02:12
Kimberly. Thank you so much for joining us.
02:14
I'm so sorry for your loss and I'm a recent parent and
02:18
hearing Lexi's story definitely got me a little choked up.
02:24
So thank you again for sharing Les's story.
02:26
Thank you for having me and allowing me the opportunity to share
02:29
Lexi's story. Why do you think it's important to share Lexi's
02:32
story with a Comunita?
02:34
It's important to share Lexi's story because I remember my life before
02:37
May 24th, 2022.
02:39
I remember watching news unfold of yet another mass shooting,
02:43
holding my kids a little bit tighter,
02:45
a little bit longer and not even being able to imagine what
02:49
those parents were going through.
02:51
And now I'm on the other side and my only fault was
02:55
leaving my daughter at school something moms do every morning all across
02:59
this country without a second thought.
03:02
So I need parents to be aware and to be voting for
03:05
gun sense candidates before they're directly impacted by gun violence themselves.
03:09
What changes do you hope to see moving forward in this country
03:13
The election of gun sense candidates this November but also the
03:16
continued work of the first ever White House Office of Gun violence
03:20
prevention, safe storage laws,
03:22
red flag laws, universal background checks.
03:24
We also have Vanessa Gonzalez VP of government and political affair at
03:28
Giffords, an anti gun violence advocacy group to chat with us
03:31
today, Vanessa. Thank you for joining us.
03:33
Yeah, of course.
03:34
What are some actionable changes to help protect our Children from gun
03:37
violence? One of the first that we have to just name
03:40
and I know everyone has heard this a lot,
03:43
but as Kim said,
03:44
you got to vote,
03:44
you got to vote for gun safety candidates.
03:46
You have to get out there.
03:47
The reality is is that Latinos die at twice,
03:51
nearly twice the level by gun violence across the nation than others
03:57
So we are also in particularly losing our men starting at
04:00
age 15. They have a higher rate of death by gun
04:04
and that all comes to about 13 Latino deaths per day.
04:09
So this is our issue and we need to demand that people
04:14
start talking about it and do something about it and then hold
04:16
them accountable once they're elected into office because again,
04:20
they work for us.
04:22
And so we need to make sure that they are moving on
04:24
our priorities. Are there any programs right now that can help
04:27
fight for gun safety?
04:29
Yeah, so there's a ton of policies that we can think
04:32
about., Kim mentioned a few and I want to
04:36
again, second our support for the Office of Gun Violence
04:39
Prevention. It is the first that we've ever had and the
04:42
people who staff it are phenomenal and have lost people to gun
04:46
violence and have actually been victims of gun violence themselves.
04:50
And last week, they just hosted with Kim and I were
04:52
lucky enough to be a part of the first conversation about the
04:57
impact of gun violence specifically on the Latino community.
05:01
And we've never seen that before.
05:02
So this is when you think about the differences in the policies
05:05
like this is real and people are listening to us.
05:08
Yeah, it seems like there's some kind of again,
05:10
hope especially for Latinos.
05:12
And by Latinos,
05:14
Kimberly, has there been any statements from Donald Trump or
05:18
Kamala Harris have affected you this election with regard to school shootings
05:22
Donald Trump said get over it.
05:24
JD Vance has said that shootings are a fact of life.
05:27
I will never get over the death of my daughter and I
05:29
do not accept Children being gunned down in classrooms.
05:33
And throughout Donald Trump's campaign,
05:35
I have been reminded of the El Paso Walmart shooting which was
05:38
carried out by a gunman who echoed the hateful rhetoric that Donald
05:42
Trump has towards Latinos.
05:44
And this is something that he continues today when he says things
05:46
like immigrants are poisoning the blood of this country.
05:49
But there's hope with Harris and Waltz.
05:52
I have personally met with Harris on multiple occasions and she is
05:55
sympathetic of Lexi's story and eager the the fight,
05:59
eager to continue the fight to end gun violence in this country
06:02
So I stand with Harris for Lexi Vanessa.
06:05
Can you speak on how an assault weapon ban could help an
06:08
assault weapon ban means that you would not be able to have
06:12
these weapons of war around streets.
06:15
Right? There is no need.
06:16
There's a lot of qualifications that go into exactly what qualifies as
06:20
an assault weapon by law,
06:22
but it is clear that it has one purpose and that is
06:25
during war times, there's no reason a teenager should be able
06:30
to have access to it.
06:32
There's really no reason for them to be on the streets.
06:34
Are there any options for addressing the trauma after gun violence?
06:38
So some of what we have seen is through the mental health
06:40
investments that have been made by Biden and Harris and Champions by
06:45
the Heritage Administration. So there's additional funding,
06:48
a couple of a million dollars into the substance abuse and mental
06:52
health services. So at the federal level,
06:54
which goes down to clinics,
06:56
there's also gonna like I said,
06:58
an influx of funds for funding in schools and how to support
07:03
Children. My daughter had a active shooter drill just
07:07
this morning and because of various reasons,
07:09
it's really traumatizing for her.
07:11
Right? But her school thankfully has social workers and therapists
07:15
on site to help kiddos who have some.
07:19
it's just really hard for them to process any final thoughts
07:22
you two want to deliver to the audience before the election.
07:25
Nobody wants to take your guns away at Giffords and the partners
07:28
I work with, we believe in the second amendment.
07:31
I'm from Texas. We hunt,
07:32
we do the whole thing,
07:33
right? Nobody wants to take your guns away.
07:34
But there is a rational way to approach guns and gun safety
07:40
There's, it doesn't have to be an either or so
07:42
I think to hear the vice president say,
07:45
I don't want to take your gun away.
07:46
That was really helpful and it is true.
07:48
There is not this big conspiracy to do that.
07:53
There are a lot of issues on the ballot,
07:56
but the priority should be our children's safety.
07:59
They are our future.
08:00
So I urge you to get out there to vote to take
08:04
Lexi with you when you vote Kimberly.
08:06
Once again, thank you so much for sharing Lexi's story and
08:09
Vanessa, thank you for your work.
08:11
Appreciate it. I honestly do II I can't.
08:14
Thank you enough. Thank you.
08:15
Bye. Make sure you go out and vote for what matters
08:18
on November 5th. This video is brought to you by Harris
08:21
Walt's campaign reminding you to go to I will vote.com to find
08:25
your polling place and make a plan to vote by November 5th
