We are here with Olympian and former pro football player,
00:04
Melissa Ortiz. Welcome.
00:12
Thank you. Happy to be here.
00:14
We're happy to have you on.
00:15
I'm a big fan of you as an athlete,
00:17
but I recently saw your video covering your egg freezing journey and
00:22
I really related to it.
00:33
Why did you decide that now was the time to freeze your
00:37
eggs? So I think there's a few reasons why I decided
00:40
now was the time one age is a factor.
00:43
So I'm 34 going on 21.
00:46
But that's ok. I learned a little by little more about
00:51
my own female body and what that entails and the fact that
00:55
I do want to have kids at some point.
00:57
But time wise and timeline,
00:59
especially in my career,
01:01
I don't want to have a baby right now.
01:04
So when it comes to egg freezing,
01:06
I learned that at 34 actually in your,
01:09
in your low thirties or even in your twenties,
01:12
it's the perfect time to do it.
01:14
Why? Because you have more eggs and also better quality eggs
01:18
So that was one of my range,
01:20
main reasonings of, hey,
01:22
I want to do this now,
01:23
I want to make sure that I do focus on my career
01:26
but I also set myself up that when the time is
01:29
right. Whether that's two years,
01:32
whether that's in 34 or five,
01:33
who knows that? I say,
01:35
you know, at 34 years old I had good,
01:37
better quality eggs. They're frozen and if at any point and
01:43
hopefully not, there's any troubles getting pregnant later on.
01:47
I have my frozen eggs from when I was 34 and a
01:51
good amount. So it was the best decision that I've done
01:54
honestly as, as a woman and as someone that prioritizes her
01:57
career, but also prioritizes her body over anything else.
02:01
And, you know,
02:02
there are a lot of us out there,
02:03
you know, that are prioritizing our career and and just
02:06
you know, other things like buying a home first and
02:09
this and that and,
02:11
you know, some of us are like,
02:12
we still don't have a partner,
02:14
you know. So it's like I'm in my thirties,
02:16
like there's a timeline,
02:17
there's pressure and then you're getting the pressure from your family too
02:20
you know. So this is very,
02:24
yeah, you get it.
02:26
Yeah, the pressure is real.
02:28
And as a Latina even more and I felt pressure as a
02:33
woman, as someone who I'm married to a Puerto Rican.
02:38
So his family is in Puerto Rinos Colombiana.
02:41
And I just felt like it was always a question of when
02:45
are you going to get pregnant.
02:46
When are you going to have a baby?
02:47
And deep down inside of me,
02:49
it's like I want to do it when I feel ready or
02:51
we feel ready as a couple and as a marriage and that
02:56
really essentially, you know,
02:57
motivated me even more to make a decision on what I wanted
03:01
to do. And again,
03:02
coming from a Latino family,
03:04
this is, this is science and this is technology,
03:08
this is all new.
03:09
And when you come from Latinos who are very traditional,
03:13
usually women, especially coming back from my family,
03:17
had kids at a younger age.
03:19
So it was kind of like a shock.
03:21
Actually, it wasn't kind of like a shock,
03:23
it was a shock.
03:24
But I think it's a shock like for anyone learning something new
03:30
And once I fully explained what the process was,
03:33
what it meant, they were so incredibly supportive,
03:37
but I really, really had to educate them,
03:40
like I had to educate myself.
03:41
And I think that's just something that we have to remind ourselves
03:45
as Latinos that yes,
03:47
we live in a very incredible tight knit family or community.
03:52
But there's time, there's a time and a place for everything
03:54
and when it's something so personal,
03:56
you really have to prioritize your decisions and what you want to
04:02
do as a person,
04:03
as a, a career,
04:05
as a woman, man,
04:06
whatever it is. And I know you've covered the World Cup
04:10
Are you coming to the Copa America,
04:12
we will see, we will see.
04:16
Well, I guess in general,
04:17
who do you think is in the Copa Home?
04:18
I'm a dual national.
04:19
So I'm a proud Americana Colombian.
04:23
So if Colombia wins it,
04:25
I'm happy if the United States wins it,
04:27
especially as a host country.
04:29
I'm happy, I think right now,
04:31
Colombia is the dark horse of this tournament and I do really
04:34
think Colombia is going to have a great tournament.
04:37
There's two really exciting friendlies coming up and it's like the pre
04:43
of America and I'll be covering that on TNT.
04:46
So it's the US men's national team against Colombia and then it's
04:50
the US men's national team against Brazil.
04:53
and that's June 8th and June 12th.
04:57
I believe so. Definitely tune into those games on TNT.
05:00
And if you could go to the stadium and watch those games
05:02
one of them is in Maryland,
05:03
the other one in Orlando,
05:04
it's going to be a five.
05:07
And last thing where can people find you?
05:09
I mean, I know you lugged the show but just if
05:11
you want to plug your socials for your coffee company as well
05:13
like that'd be awesome.
05:14
The coffee company is at kickoff Coffee Co I,
05:18
I don't know if you see it.
05:20
You can either, I can see it and then my own
05:22
personal one is at Melissa Ortiz five.
05:26
But thank you so much,
05:27
Melissa. We really appreciate you being on the show and sharing
05:32
your journey with us and being super transparent with us on this
05:36
subject. So thank you so much.
