Hey guys, welcome back to LA H and brother.
00:09
I know we always talk about it.
00:12
Housing is so freaking expensive right now.
00:15
Like I know I moved out and I've been saving and
00:19
saving and saving, but I don't see anything happening.
00:21
All these mortgages and down payments and I just feel like our
00:24
generation is doomed. I just give up.
00:25
No, what? We can't,
00:28
we can't get it together.
00:30
I get my cards back.
00:33
Well, look today we have Representative Analise Ortiz who fights for
00:38
housing affordability and first time home buyer programs.
00:42
How you doing? Good and you could be better if I
00:45
can afford a house.
00:46
But what are you doing?
00:49
Good? I can't complain.
00:51
I can't complain. Well,
00:52
thank you so much for taking the time with your representative.
00:54
We wanted to ask,
00:55
so we keep hearing about venture capitalist firms and corporations buying up
00:59
homes making housing unaffordable.
01:02
Can you tell us a bit more about that?
01:03
I represent a district here in Arizona that is majority Latino and
01:08
it includes West Phoenix in South Glendale.
01:11
And corporate homeownership continues to be a problem because we have corporations
01:17
who are seeing that Arizona has a housing shortage and they are
01:21
taking advantage of that by buying homes and then renting them out
01:25
at much higher prices.
01:26
I know both presidential candidates have dropped their housing policies.
01:30
This election? Can you tell us about Kamala Harris's new
01:33
plan for affordable housing and how it affects the Latino community?
01:38
I'm really encouraged to see that Vice President Harris and in our
01:42
walls, really see the importance of building more housing as a
01:47
crucial need to drive down costs.
01:49
We have what is essentially a huge supply and demand problem when
01:54
it comes to housing.
01:55
We have too many people that want need a place to
01:59
live and we just have not been building at the rate that
02:01
is necessary. And then you add on the complications of having
02:05
those corporate homeowners and you're left with this affordability crisis that we're
02:09
seeing right now. So I'm very encouraged that Vice President Harris
02:13
wants to build and to expedite development of all types of housing
02:18
She also has proposed giving homeownership down payment assistance up to
02:23
$25,000 to help families pay that down payment.
02:28
And this is huge for Latinos because we continue to be behind
02:33
our white counterparts when it comes to homeownership.
02:36
And that has to do with the many,
02:38
many factors, but it absolutely has to do with systemic racism
02:42
that has impacted housing from the beginning of this country's inception.
02:47
So the fact that she wants to give people that little bit
02:50
of assistance so they can get into a house and to level
02:53
the playing field so that regardless of race,
02:57
you can become a homeowner.
02:58
I'm really excited about that.
03:00
So there's some hope for us.
03:01
Is there some hope for it?
03:04
And I know that both Trump and JD Vance have openly spoken
03:08
about deporting undocumented immigrants to make room for housing.
03:10
How would that even work?
03:12
First of all, it's just absolutely ridiculous.
03:15
They are playing this game that they love to play,
03:17
which is to demonize migrants and blame them for all of the
03:22
other problems that exist in our country when that is just not
03:26
true and it is not the case.
03:27
It's really wrong to try to equate our housing crisis with immigration
03:32
and the normal immigration patterns of people coming to America and making
03:36
it their home. They have said repeatedly that they want mass
03:40
deportations and that should terrify anybody.
03:42
It would bring in huge constitutional and civil rights violations.
03:46
And then on top of that,
03:48
this whole idea that it would somehow address our housing crisis is
03:52
just bogus. It seems like again,
03:54
like you said, it's a scare tactic and just an excuse
03:56
right, the scapegoat for this.
03:58
And do they actually have any substantial policies that could help like
04:02
homeowners or is it just all in this kind of,
04:05
unfortunately, I have not really seen anything that would be a
04:08
substantial change to the,
04:10
the need for homeownership to be more attainable.
04:13
Coming from the Republican Party here in Arizona,
04:16
we have had some success in pushing bipartisan legislation on housing.
04:21
So I'm excited about the,
04:23
bipartisan wins.
04:24
We've been able to get done through our state legislature,
04:27
but it's very different on the federal level.
04:29
Much more complicated to get Congress to agree.
04:33
and so I feel as though what we're seeing definitely
04:37
from the presidential candidates.
04:39
Vice President Harris is the only candidate with an actual plan
04:44
that is going to drive down the cost of rent and housing
04:47
Ok. These are the presidential candidate policies,
04:49
but is there anywhere else that we can find help?
04:52
I mean, it's tough out here in the streets.
04:55
Oh yeah, I mean,
04:56
is there any additional bills in play to help first time home
04:59
buyers that we should be aware of?
05:01
I would encourage you in whatever state you're watching from to look
05:06
into your state's housing departments,
05:09
you might be able to find some assistance there here in Arizona
05:13
I was really proud to have played a key role in
05:16
doubling investments to our state's housing trust fund and some of that
05:20
money went to a down payment assistance program here locally.
05:25
So it's definitely something that within your own respective states,
05:28
you should be pushing your elected leaders to take action on the
05:32
local level. Thank you so much,
05:34
Representative Ortiz, we really appreciate you,
05:36
you know, helping us out with this and,
05:38
and giving us more resources and we're definitely more hopeful and maybe
05:44
you know, I will be a homeowner one day.
05:45
You too, but we need more people like you because yeah
05:51
it's tough out there.
05:52
I know I keep saying it,
05:53
but it's really, really tough.
05:54
But how can we follow you and support?
05:57
