Today we have Jay Flores,
00:01
a Cheetos, they got the ambassador and a scientist,
00:05
Jay. Hey, how's it going?
00:08
Welcome. How are you doing?
00:11
Good, doing good.
00:12
Appreciate you joining us.
00:14
We wanted to learn more about your organization.
00:16
It's not magic, it's science.
00:18
Can you tell us all about it?
00:19
Yeah, it's not magic.
00:21
It's science came out during the pandemic.
00:23
Actually, I knew kids weren't going to have access to fun
00:26
science experiments. They weren't gonna have engineers visiting their schools.
00:29
They weren't gonna be able to do any hands on stuff.
00:32
School was going to be difficult on zoom and science and math
00:35
were gonna be that much more difficult to be engaging on zoom
00:38
So I wanted to find a way to engage them with
00:41
science, things that they could do at home,
00:44
but in a way that they weren't feeling like it was school
00:47
So they would come on,
00:48
they would just see this kind of magical trick and then maybe
00:52
hopefully worry or wonder how did he do that.
00:55
And since I'm a scientist and not a magician,
00:57
I can actually teach you the science behind the trick and has
01:01
just kind of exploded since then.
01:03
So it went from just social media to getting,
01:06
you know, of views on tiktok and Instagram to then now
01:09
I do a live show where I take the kids up just
01:12
like you and I might go to a show in Vegas and
01:14
the magician tells you to choose a card or something like that
01:16
I have the kids come up on stage.
01:18
We have bigger versions of the experiments and then they all get
01:21
to take home one of our,
01:22
it's not magic at science kids with them to do the experiments
01:25
themselves. So that's been one of the most important parts for
01:27
me is to increase that access and equity so that kids feel
01:30
like they can do it.
01:31
They don't have to have any special fancy equipment.
01:33
It's all stuff that you can find around the home,
01:34
but present it in a really fun way.
01:36
That's cool. It's like Criss angel.
01:38
But science, I love that.
01:40
I love that. So what does it mean to be a
01:44
Cheetos de way ambassador?
01:47
And what did it mean to you to be selected?
01:50
You know, science isn't something that's as celebrated in our society
01:53
especially within the Hispanic community as much,
01:56
right? And so I wanted to make sure that I could
01:59
bring that to the table as something that should be celebrated as
02:01
a path forward for our community as a great way to
02:05
kind of change generations and provide opportunities.
02:09
And the money has allowed me to be able to reach
02:12
kids that won't always get these types of opportunities.
02:14
And that's why it's been so meaningful for me to be able
02:17
to be one of the ambassadors because not only are we providing
02:20
Hispanic representation in the space where I never grew up seeing any
02:23
Hispanic scientists or engineers on TV or movies.
02:28
And if I did it was on something like a Narcos type
02:30
movie, right? And so it was not the type of
02:33
energy and education that I wanted the kids to be seeing.
02:36
So not to be able to shine a light on that,
02:38
but then also provide the opportunities to the students that need it
02:40
the most, the kids that aren't getting science kids bought for
02:43
them or they don't have the most engaging experiences with it.
02:46
Now they have someone that looks like them and they can go
02:48
and do it themselves.
02:49
What advice do you have for those trying to leave their mark
02:53
Because I know you're very influential,
02:55
sounds like you're already leaving your mark.
02:57
But what advice do you have for others trying to do that
03:00
too? The first thing I would say is that we often
03:03
look at it as like,
03:04
oh, I'm a volunteer,
03:05
I'm doing this work for others,
03:07
but it's actually so much more rewarding for yourself,
03:10
all of these opportunities that I've received,
03:12
starting my own business,
03:14
whatever cool things that have happened to me in life are usually
03:17
because I've cared about other people.
03:19
So the more you try to help other people,
03:22
the stronger, the more successful you personally need to become.
03:25
And so that kind of grows your impact on others,
03:30
but also on what you're able to accomplish yourself.
03:33
And then the other piece of advice is you got to
03:35
figure out what you're passionate about as early as possible.
03:39
And if you have that already,
03:41
if you know, you love science or you know,
03:43
you love sports or whatever it is that you're passionate about,
03:45
dig into that as much as you can spend as much of
03:48
your energy time, money if you need to into that
03:52
thing that you care about a lot because that's where you're going
03:54
to have the most success and where you're going to have the
03:56
most impact on others.
03:57
And if you don't know what that is yet,
03:59
just try a bunch of things,
04:00
right? Like pick up different sports,
04:02
try different hobbies, talk to people,
04:05
look up youtube videos now on people that have success in different
04:08
areas and that will allow you to start figuring out what areas
04:11
you might be more excited about.
04:13
And once you find that one that really clicks,
04:15
you're going to then be able to find all that energy and
04:17
to make yourself very successful and impactful in that space.
04:20
OJ Thank you for your time.
04:22
I hope we get to catch a show like IRL one of
04:25
these days because I saw your social videos and they're awesome.
04:27
But yeah, I wanna,
04:28
like you said, of curiosity behind magic is like,
04:30
I want to know how he did it.
04:31
It's like, well,
04:32
here you go. Yeah,
04:33
I love how passionate you are about what you do.
04:35
We're rooting for you and,
04:36
and everything you're doing for the community.
04:39
So thank you so much Jay.
04:40
And where can people find you on social media?
04:43
Yep. So my tiktok Instagram is at J Flores inspires.
04:47
