It's Pride Month. It's also that time of year where companies
00:04
swap their logo to their rainbow version.
00:07
A lot of businesses and companies collaborate with queer business owners to
00:10
highlight pride products and merge.
00:12
But what happens when these companies change their mind?
00:16
Latina queer business owners,
00:17
Jen and Vero from shop JZD are here to share their experience
00:22
with Target. Hi,
00:23
ladies, how are you doing,
00:25
Yemen? Hi. Thank you so much for having us.
00:28
Of course, thank you for coming on.
00:30
We really appreciate it.
00:31
So give us the rundown on what happened.
00:34
Why did Target pull your collaboration collection from its shelves?
00:38
We worked with Target for Hispanic Heritage Month.
00:42
And then when we were in that process,
00:45
we also got contracted to work for pride.
00:49
This was pride last year.
00:51
And so we designed a beautiful collection.
00:54
We made all of these beautiful products.
00:58
And then before pride month even started,
01:02
Target made the decision to pull a majority of the products
01:07
not just from our brand but from other queer owned businesses
01:11
And at first the story that we heard from other Target
01:17
employees that were JZD customers that were emailing us and be like
01:21
hey, this is happening was that they were prioritizing swimwear
01:25
sales in the what they call the Bible belt.
01:29
So what you can imagine is Texas Georgia,
01:33
North Carolina, South Carolina,
01:35
you know all that area,
01:38
they just decided, oh,
01:39
we want to prioritize swimwear sales.
01:42
It's what we were being told,
01:43
not by target but by employees that were messaging us saying,
01:49
hey, what do you know what's going on?
01:51
Can you stop what's going on?
01:53
Yeah. And I mean,
01:54
these are the states that have the most anti LGBT bills being
01:58
passed. And so at first we had no idea what was
02:03
happening. We were like,
02:03
what is going on.
02:05
We tried to reach out to people in our team that had
02:08
been communicating with us.
02:10
We literally found out from DM on Instagram emails and emails from
02:16
employees from Target. Wow,
02:19
because I remember seeing it at my Target,
02:21
but I saw it and I was so happy for you.
02:22
I was like, oh my God,
02:26
it was such an exciting week.
02:28
We went from the highest,
02:29
highest 8321 premiere of the J Hi Mia.
02:48
And I just get emotional because I think back to when I
02:52
was a kid and how much I denied myself being who I
02:58
really was. I saw the video because I'm like,
03:03
damn, dude, you know,
03:06
at this point, we knew the items had been taken down
03:09
We had already been getting D MS from our customers that
03:11
had tried to go into the target stores and they weren't allowing
03:15
them to buy it.
03:15
Even if it was still out,
03:18
they would go to check out and Target would be like,
03:20
I'm so sorry, I can't tell you this and take it
03:22
away from them online orders and like curbside or store pickup orders
03:27
were being canceled without telling the customers why.
03:31
So we knew all of that and we knew they were not
03:34
going to put the items back up like that was,
03:37
that was gone. So our thing was at this point,
03:43
we want Target to put out a statement and say we stand
03:47
with the queer community,
03:49
the LGBT community and not just say like,
03:52
hey, we're being bullied.
03:54
So I'm going to take a step back and leave them in
03:56
the forefront because our branding was on all of these items,
04:02
images, our picture together as wife and wife was on the
04:06
tag and all these,
04:10
I don't know, I mean we were in the middle of
04:12
it but all the Tik Tok videos and the Instagram videos and
04:15
literally they would grab our shirts and our faces right there and
04:19
they would say like they're pedophiles out there.
04:21
They come for our Children and they're trying to shove this down
04:25
my Children. You know,
04:26
like we got called the absolute worst things that you could ever
04:31
imagine. And Target just was like,
04:37
bye like I have no idea.
04:40
Like, I'm just gonna leave you guys out there.
04:42
Like I put your face out there,
04:43
I put your brand out there now,
04:45
I'm in trouble and I'm stepping back and you've got to deal
04:50
with it on your own.
04:51
How can people right now come and support you guys and,
04:54
and buy your products the best thing.
04:57
It's not just for us,
04:59
but like support queer businesses and shop directly from small queer owned
05:04
brands. And that makes the biggest difference because we turn around
05:08
and we go back and we support other queer brands.
05:11
Yeah, so they can find us at shop J CD across
05:13
all social medias. And our website is also Shop J cd.com
05:18
Thank you guys so much.
05:19
We appreciate you guys.
05:20
I know this is a very,
05:21
very hard topic to talk about.
05:23
It's very, you know,
05:24
brings up a lot of emotion.
05:26
So I appreciate your vulnerability,
05:28
the both of you guys and I'm,
05:30
I'm gonna continue to support and I know our community will too
05:33
Thank you so much for having us and for your support
05:36
to us. Thank you for you guys.
05:38
Take care. OK?
05:39
We didn't say.
