00:00
The National Hispanic Media Coalition has released a media guide to advise
00:03
Hollywood on how to tell authentic Latino stories.
00:06
And we have the NHM CS CEO and President Brenda Victoria Castillo
00:10
and actress Francia Raisa to tell us about it.
00:14
Welcome. Welcome guys.
00:17
Happy Friday. Thank you for joining us.
00:21
Thanks for having us.
00:22
I mean, this is I think a good move forward
00:24
in Hollywood that we've all been waiting for and we kinda make
00:27
some progress, but then we kinda get stuck.
00:29
So anyways, let's just type in.
00:31
So Brenda, can you explain the NH MC media guide
00:35
and have the studios been receptive?
00:37
Yes. But let me just tell you first,
00:39
a little bit about National Hispanic Media Coalition.
00:42
We are a civil and human rights organization and we're here trying
00:46
to eliminate hate discrimination and racism to the Latin community.
00:51
And when I say Latin community,
00:53
I mean, Afro Latinos,
00:54
indigenous Latinos, Asian Latinos,
00:56
we are members of the LGBT Q plus community.
00:59
We're veterans, we have disabilities,
01:03
24 different countries and we don't all just speak Spanish and English
01:07
We there's many indigenous languages.
01:10
So when I say Latin,
01:11
that's what I mean and that's what NH MC is fighting for
01:15
The media guy was created as a resource to provide industry
01:19
professionals with a comprehensive education about our community.
01:24
And we're getting very good response.
01:26
The market was high executive studios,
01:29
you know, whoever's at the top and usually they're white males
01:33
and to educate them about our community because instead of fearing us
01:39
in our numbers that they should embrace us because when they don't
01:43
they're leaving money on the table.
01:44
So I am providing 30 minute one on one sessions off the
01:48
record virtually and or creating a safe space so they can
01:54
ask those questions that they might not want to ask publicly because
01:57
they think it might be public politically and correct.
02:01
But that's what I'm there for and they're very receptive.
02:05
So I'm really excited.
02:06
We're getting a really good response.
02:08
Congratulations. That is so awesome.
02:10
Thank you. And also Francia as an actress,
02:14
did any past experiences inspire you to get behind this initiative the
02:19
entire past of my experience,
02:22
you know, I just realized that this year I'll be hitting
02:25
20 years in the industry and wow,
02:28
how much has it changed?
02:30
You know, back in the day when I first started,
02:32
I don't know if you know,
02:35
these things were available to me because,
02:37
you know, the internet was still kind of newer back then
02:40
you know, I was really alone and I felt isolated when
02:43
I first started and,
02:45
you know, and having conversations with,
02:47
you know, writers and stuff.
02:49
I didn't really know how to open up about what real experiences
02:52
as a Latino is like,
02:54
versus what they've seen on television or they've read about in the
02:57
stereotype. So I just stayed quiet.
02:59
So I got behind it because now people are more receptive to
03:02
hearing us and learning about us.
03:04
And I want to be a part of it because I was
03:06
also part of the train that didn't say anything.
03:08
So it's amazing that we can turn to a program like this
03:12
or I can call brand and say,
03:13
hey, can you read this script?
03:15
Am I on the right track or is there something here?
03:19
That's not right? Can you help me in talking with the
03:21
studios about this? And they're so receptive to it?
03:24
So it's really beautiful that for all parties we can really turn
03:27
to. I think it's so true that you mentioned that because
03:31
Latinos, we come in all different shapes and sizes,
03:33
different backgrounds. So it's like if you're more,
03:35
you learn about other,
03:36
you know, Latinos in your community that you might not always
03:40
being a Mexican American in L A,
03:42
I've had my little bubble but then we started working with some
03:44
Dominican people, Puerto Rican and it's like,
03:47
where has all this been?
03:49
I played, I played Cuban on Grown Ish.
03:51
I'm not Cuban, I'm Mexican Hondurena.
03:53
And I'm calling all my friends like,
03:57
I mean, what's going on here?
03:59
Am I pronouncing this?
04:00
Right? I don't know.
04:03
That's great though. You're doing your research.
04:06
So I wanted to ask what is a movie or show that
04:08
has nailed the Latino experience?
04:11
Flowers? Yeah. Well,
04:12
Flaming Hot. How I met your father Lopez versus Lopez.
04:20
The Gordita chronicles with Love Gloria Colette's show and a top one
04:29
which was number one for many weeks.
04:33
Because this movie made me sob a million miles away.
04:38
Oh my God. Literally when they did the hands,
04:42
I lost it. That one hit home and even like the
04:47
minor things, you know,
04:48
when the dad first came home and all the kids are sitting
04:52
down and he comes home and all the kids stand up and
04:54
then he sits and they're taking off his shoes.
04:55
I was like, oh my God,
04:59
where can people find you know,
05:00
more influence and resources on this?
05:02
Because we have so many aspiring Latino filmmakers and actors trying to
05:06
get their big break and learn more,
05:09
thank you. It's free to everybody.
05:10
Just go to NH mc.org and you can download it and just
05:14
print it out, save it whatever you want to do and
05:17
it's gonna grow. It's a living document.
05:20
So yesterday I decided we're gonna put a section for the publishing
05:23
companies and then we're gonna do a section for gaming because that's
05:27
another area where our characters are not represented of us.
05:33
Truly. A lot of characters in those games are negative like
05:37
we're the criminals, the bad guys.
05:39
So we're going to get into that this year.
05:41
There's so much to do.
05:42
I'm really excited. 2024 is going to be a great
05:46
year for us. Thank you guys.
05:48
Thank you guys so much.
05:50
Yeah, thanks for all the time.
05:52
again, we're excited to see what keeps happening and developing and
05:56
Happy Friday and thank you both.
