00:01
Ana Barraza had a great interview with HGTV S Rey and Eileen
00:06
Jimenez about their new show divided by design.
00:13
I'm kind of jealous.
00:15
I'm going to have to check this out because I need to
00:18
rearrange some furniture or something.
00:20
the energy is dead in my apartment.
00:22
Well, brother, I think you could learn something.
00:26
We are joined by Rey and Eileen Jimenez from the new show
00:31
on HGTV. Divided by design.
00:38
First of all, you guys look real good show today,
00:44
brush my teeth and I got a haircut.
00:47
It's good. I didn't get a haircut.
00:50
The hair looks fabulous.
00:51
Thank you. Thank you.
00:53
Tell me about the new show.
00:56
What part? Everything,
00:57
tell me everything. Well,
00:59
the quick synopsis of the show is we're married and we both
01:03
are interior designers. However,
01:04
we have our independent studios,
01:07
so I got my own thing going and she has her own
01:09
thing going. However,
01:10
we don't work together.
01:11
Maybe we collaborate here and there and there's a little bit of
01:14
competition. I mean,
01:15
technically we are competitors in real life and on divided by design
01:18
So how does it feel to be one of the first
01:21
Latino host on HGTV?
01:24
It's amazing. I mean,
01:25
I think to be honest to represent the Latino culture and represent
01:29
in so many ways from not only the Dominican side,
01:34
but also as professionals,
01:35
as entrepreneurs, as people who work really hard or really excited
01:39
to kind of showcase that and show the world what we're all
01:42
about. And why did you guys decide to work separately and
01:47
have your own? That's how we met.
01:51
We met 78 years ago at Art B.
01:54
So even through a mutual friend,
01:55
Christian, he's actually our mutual wallpaper vendor and his childhood best
01:59
friend. So we owe a lot to him.
02:02
Thank you. Thank you.
02:07
So I was single for about a year.
02:08
At least I told myself I need to be single for about
02:10
a year. And he was like,
02:12
listen, I know you're on a mission but there's somebody I
02:17
OK, let's, let's do it.
02:18
So he introduced us and the rest was history.
02:21
So I should listen to my friends when they try to set
02:24
they know you better think about your friends,
02:27
they know what you're looking for,
02:28
all of that and same thing he would talk to me about
02:32
oh, do you know Rey?
02:33
He's my friend and look,
02:34
the truth is when you're in the industry,
02:36
you know, who competition is and,
02:38
you know, you wanna be acquainted.
02:39
So you're kind of familiar who they are.
02:42
And I always thought I was like,
02:43
well, he's really good looking,
02:45
we both were in relationships,
02:47
you know, he was in his relationship and I was in
02:48
mine, the universe planned it for it to be a way
02:51
where we met at the right time.
02:53
We were both single and we were ready to,
02:55
at least I was ready to mingle.
02:56
He wanted to single,
02:58
but he couldn't stay away.
03:00
That's, that's what I'm saying.
03:01
He couldn't stay away.
03:03
So we are divided by design,
03:04
but we are unified by design at the end of the day
03:06
So is it now that you guys have the show?
03:08
Is it difficult being married and working together?
03:12
Because they always say don't work with your friends don't work with
03:15
You know. So I think this is a great balance
03:17
because technically we do have our own separate studios and it means
03:22
that we reign in our own independent,
03:25
nobody understands what we're going for than each other because we're both
03:29
in the industry. And I think that is the benefit of
03:31
working with your spouse.
03:33
They understand they can contribute actual ideas and solutions to your business
03:37
because they actually understand what you're going through.
03:40
And I think that is one of the most beautiful things in
03:42
a relationship that yes,
03:44
during the day, you know,
03:48
Yes, during the day,
03:49
you know, we have our own studios and we do our
03:51
thing. But then when we go home at the end of
03:53
the day and talk about our day and what happened,
03:56
we're actually contributing and giving advice that works because we both understand
04:00
what we're going through and what advice do you have for new
04:04
married couples or, you know,
04:06
maybe couples that have been doing it for a long time.
04:08
That's a loaded question.
04:10
I think my automatic response to this one is unconditional love.
04:14
You know, like if you don't have that,
04:16
then you just might as well call it.
04:18
But no matter what Eileen does what she says,
04:20
yes, it could be her for,
04:21
it could be the greatest thing in the world.
04:23
I'm going to love her regardless.
04:31
and it is true at the end of the day,
04:33
what they say, marry your best friend.
04:35
Like somebody I always say being with re we've been together ready
04:39
for eight years and being with Rey.
04:41
Even if it's just for or the end of the day,
04:43
it's like when you're a kid and your best friend is sleeping
04:45
over your house and you're so excited because you're gonna hang out
04:48
That is what being married to him feels like.
04:51
So when you marry your best friend,
04:52
no matter how hard the day is,
04:54
no matter if you're fighting,
04:55
you still want to be with that person.
04:57
I think that's so important in any relationship.
04:59
So, tell us about design.
05:01
Who makes the decisions when it comes to designing your home?
05:07
That's an automatic? Like we do try to collaborate.
05:16
You get each room you get the should,
05:21
That should be part of the episode.
05:30
I do think that when it comes to designing,
05:32
it's really about a compromise.
05:33
There's things that are really important to Rey and there's things that
05:35
are really important to me and I think he understands that and
05:39
so there's something that is really important to him and he really
05:41
likes fine run with it and vice versa.
05:43
It's like anything you're gonna have a compromise,
05:45
it's two different aesthetics.
05:46
But I think when it came down like to our house,
05:49
we both had a clear path of what we wanted that to
05:51
be like. And we've worked collectively make that happen.
05:54
And I think it's been fun.
05:55
It's been fun. I mean,
05:56
of course, there's challenges because there's certain things I want to
05:59
push the envelope in when we are the head honchos in our
06:02
own respective studios. When you are the creative directors of our
06:06
own studios, it becomes a challenge.
06:08
Like why are you questioning me?
06:09
Nobody questions it you know,
06:10
why are you telling me you can do this?
06:12
But I think it's been also super insightful because there's,
06:15
you know, decisions that I was reluctant on that he pushed
06:18
I love now and I hope it's vice versa where,
06:20
you know, same thing with him where he was like,
06:22
I'm not sure about this and once you see it done,
06:24
you're like now I get it.
06:26
It's two design brains coming together to create and I think it
06:30
should be special. Yeah.
06:32
Yeah. Well, thanks for coming and talking to us.
06:35
Thank you for having us.
06:36
Lovely. Thank you so much for having us,
06:40
dude. That was so cool.
06:43
shout out to Anna and obviously to Ray Eileen for joining us
06:46
and don't forget to check out divided by design on August 20th
