00:00
On Monday, seven aid workers from Chef Jose Andres's World Central
00:04
Kitchen were killed in Gaza by an Israeli airstrike.
00:08
The nonprofit delivered much needed food and water to the Gaza Strip
00:13
but has now paused operations.
00:15
The seven workers delivered more than 100 tons of aid and were
00:19
traveling in marked vehicles.
00:20
The nonprofit says it informed the Israeli government.
00:24
They were coming. ID F hit the cars with a drone
00:26
strike killing the seven aid workers.
00:29
The victims were from Australia,
00:31
Palestine Poland the UK and included a US Canadian citizen.
00:36
In response, Chef Jose Andres wrote the Israeli government needs to
00:41
stop this indiscriminate killing needs to stop restricting human Unitarian aid,
00:47
stopped killing civilians and aid workers.
00:49
President Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the situation is
00:55
unacceptable. He has called on an investigation.
00:59
Reports show that the US approved thousands of more bombs to Israel
01:04
on the day. The aid workers were killed.
01:07
Id F called the attack on the aid vehicles a serious mistake
01:11
and a failure resulting from wrong identification.
01:14
And in response world central kitchen said Id F cannot credibly investigate
01:21
its own failure and demanded an independent investigation They also said that
01:26
the root cause of the tragedy is the severe lack of food
01:30
in Gaza and called on Israel to dramatically increase the volume of
01:34
food and medicine. To them.
01:36
Here to explain the situation is Chef Grace Ramirez,
01:40
an ambassador for World Central Kitchen.
01:42
Welcome, Chef Grace.
01:43
Thank you so much for being here today with us.
01:46
Thank you for having me.
01:47
I appreciate it. So for anyone who doesn't know what is
01:51
World Central Kitchen and how did it come to be?
01:56
we are a chef relief team.
01:57
It was founded by chef Jose Andres.
02:02
And what we do is respond to,
02:06
to different sorts of emergencies being natural disasters or in this case
02:12
was war before it was,
02:15
you know, wholesale only responded to natural disasters.
02:20
it's evolved and now it's one of the most recognized organizations
02:25
NGO S to feed people in need in different sorts of
02:30
settings. How was World Central Kitchen helping in Gaza?
02:35
Like I know you were recently there.
02:40
Zomi Frank come being a dear friend,
02:43
a colleague who we've served in many places.
02:48
they were there full time distributing meals to those in need
02:55
There was about 43 million meals who were,
02:59
had been distributed up to up to date.
03:03
I could not enter Gaza in the operation.
03:07
Nome Kawas I was in Israel and the border of
03:13
Gaza trying to get in but no meto,
03:22
we saw chef Jose Andres speak out against Israel.
03:25
Do you share his outrage?
03:28
I need people to understand that there's tremendous suffering in both sides
03:35
you know, after October 7th.
03:39
there was a lot of people affected by that tragic,
03:43
you know, I don't think I need to state the obvious
03:47
of what is currently happening as a humanitarian myself.
03:52
I saw the despair and suffering on both sides and,
03:58
you know, people obviously,
04:00
you know, and now it's become a disproportionate amount of death
04:07
one versus the other.
04:09
But, but it's still death and there's still there's so
04:15
many millions of people affected by this tragedy.
04:21
it's such a difficult time and I mean,
04:24
this has been going on forever,
04:29
And we know you were close with Zomi.
04:33
How can we best honor the world Central Kitchen?
04:37
Like the volunteers who were killed.
04:40
She would have wanted me for me to honor her in,
04:47
in saying how selfless she was,
04:52
how incredibly hard working she was.
04:56
And that she was the first one to be called to go
05:00
anywhere and anywhere and everywhere in the world.
05:04
and for dedication and passion to what she did,
05:09
you know, this was her calling.
05:11
She passed doing what she loved and as tragic as it is
05:16
I understand because it's like if you are going to
05:21
pass doing what you love.
05:25
I have much respect for that and,
05:27
and we need to remember that she,
05:30
she died in a horrible,
05:31
tragic way, but she died doing what she loved that was
05:36
serving others. That is very true and beautiful words.
05:41
Chef Grace since World Central Kitchen has suspended activities in Gaza
05:47
who will fill that void?
05:48
Are people just going to starve now?
05:51
Well, I think they're trying to,
05:52
the leadership team is trying to figure that out right now.
05:55
What are the next steps to take?
05:58
You know, Jose is very committed to being in Gaza
06:01
I just cannot speak on behalf of what his plans are
06:05
but I'm sure that the team is trying to figure it
06:07
out. Absolutely. And as a regular person,
06:11
civilian, what can I do to channel the frustration,
06:15
the anger and, and I mean,
06:17
even help the people in Gaza,
06:20
we need to donate to the different organizations that are being there
06:26
I doubt that World Center Kitchen would stop forever.
06:33
You know, but right now what we can do is
06:37
is support the different organizations that are there on the ground doctors
06:42
and, and people that,
06:45
that are there helping,
06:47
you know, and as humans,
06:50
I think that, that we just need to remember that,
06:53
that we can demonized and create more and a Fuego,
07:04
you know, I know that we're all Indignados conto,
07:08
right? But hate just fuels more hate and that doesn't serve
07:15
anybody. I think that's very important to remember and that's saying
07:21
it, it's in Spanish,
07:23
but it's always in my mind.
07:25
Thank you so much for being here today.
07:28
We really appreciate you talking about this tough story with us
07:32

07:57

08:30
Thank you so so much.
08:32
I really appreciate it.
08:35
Chef Grace reminded us.
08:37
No, Ie Charleen El Fuego.
08:40
I aa that's what these humanitarian aid workers are doing and we're
08:45
doing so we should honor them to celebrate the work that they
08:48
were doing most definitely.
