When I was in high school.

I had a friend who was Argentinian but she was raised in Japan

She was really, really cool.

One time she brought a friend that was visiting from Japan

and she introduced her to me.

And so the friend in Japanese goes to my friend, hey, tell her

that her nose is really big.

And so my friend goes, hey, my friend says that your nose is

really big and I look at her and I'm like, ok.

Um Yes, I know that it is why I was just a little confused because

in my head, I'm like, bitch that's rude.

And so she sees the face that I'm making and the friend goes

No, no, no, I consider your nose very beautiful because it's

so rare to see such a big nose in Japan.

And so I put my hands together and I bow to her and I'm like, thank

I, you saying that my nose is big and all of a sudden she changes

her face and she goes, why did you bow to me?

She's like, I'm not Chinese, I'm Japanese.

That's really racist.

And so to play it off, I was like, oh shit.

No, I, you know, I was just saying thank you Jesus and I crossed

I'm like, thank you God, thank you that I have a big nose.

I did not know what to in that moment it was very awkward and

obviously I came off as racist and ignorant, which in my defense

there's not a big population of Asians in Miami.

So I don't have a lot of Asian friends.

I didn't know what to do.

And I'm sorry because yes, I was a little ignorant and now I

know that you don't bow to a Japanese person.

I was just like, OK, I need to do my research on this Asian culture

because I clearly don't know any of it.

And I don't want to look that ignorant.

So I looked it up and I realized that in Japan people do bow but

they have different vows for specific things.

Like the one that I did was very racist.

And apparently that's more for Chinese culture.
