Familia, me too.
00:01
Today we're speaking with Aza Gonzalez,
00:03
also known as Violetta in I Love Boosters.
00:06
Aya, congratulations on the film.
00:08
You're so sweet. Thank you.
00:09
Of course I watched it and I enjoyed myself.
00:12
32. Yoletta, your character is fierce.
00:19
She's an advocate. She is for the people,
00:21
especially her girls. If you worry about them getting in trouble
00:24
we can just lock them in a stock.
00:26
How did it feel to take on a character that embodies the
00:29
mentality many Latinas carry in 2026?
00:32
Yeah, I mean,
00:33
it was really meaningful and and it had a real sense of
00:37
Agency and timely impetu to it.
00:40
I felt like in the world we're living,
00:43
and you know it's interesting because when we made this movie,
00:46
it was like 2 years ago,
00:47
but it feels incredibly timely at the moment and I just love
00:50
that Violetta was a person of her people.
00:52
People of a community that cares about others more than she cares
00:56
about herself, she's willing to frontline and take the heat for
01:01
the rest of her community and I thought,
01:03
wow, that really felt similar to the Latin experience and so
01:08
I don't think it was a casualty that,
01:10
you know, Boots chose to cast a Latina for that character
01:14
Director Boots Riley leads by activism through his work,
01:17
and as someone who has been outspoken for our Latino community,
01:21
what lessons did this film leave you with about art and film
01:24
being a form of advocacy?
01:25
For me, being part of a movie that really raises interesting
01:30
conversations and. And it sparks discussion and deliberately creates controversy in
01:36
a good way. It's more about like real deep reflection and
01:41
what are we doing with our lives and how we're coexisting in
01:44
this society. And Boots is just a brilliant person.
01:47
He's not a narcissistic,
01:50
egotistical man who's like,
01:52
it's my way or the highway.
01:53
It's not like a You know,
01:54
our business can be really self-absorbed and treat others like we're just
01:59
pawns or pieces in the puzzle.
02:01
And when a man or a director like him encourages an all-female
02:06
cast, treats us with respect,
02:07
treats us with, you know,
02:09
the desire, equality that we deserve,
02:12
and not make us feel like we are there,
02:14
we need to, you know,
02:16
gain something in order to To get the basic treatment,
02:21
it just felt like Boots cared about quality storytelling.
02:25
He was thoughtful of humans behind these characters.
02:27
He thought, how could this make these people feel,
02:30
because that's going to impact the results of the film,
02:32
and I do think that that is very meaningful,
02:34
so. I'm just hopeful when I see directors like this existing
02:38
And you had an iconic moment earlier this year at the
02:40
Vanity Fair carpet. You kindly set the record straight on how
02:43
to correctly pronounce your name.
02:45
I'm curious, as someone who's been in this industry since you
02:49
were a child, what inspires you to be an advocate for
02:51
yourself so confidently and yet so kind?
02:54
That's so sweet. Thank you.
02:55
That means a lot.
02:56
I think that just like constantly feeling like erasure of self is
03:00
really tough, you know,
03:01
I think that. It just goes to show that you have
03:04
and I'm not saying,
03:05
you know, I'm a massive actress,
03:06
but I'm just like I've been in the industry enough for people
03:08
to take. You know,
03:11
take a beat to learn someone's name.
03:13
Like that is just being empathetic,
03:15
thoughtful, a kind citizen.
03:17
I just think that's important.
03:19
And if you're not taking a minute to recognize someone in the
03:23
public eye who's been Conversating with you and red carpets with you
03:27
probably for the time like it just raises a big question of
03:30
like if you're not doing it with me,
03:32
like how is with others like it it it creates erasure and
03:37
it is important for me that people pronounce my name right
03:40
It is important for me to say my last name correctly
03:42
There's a reason why I never would change my name or
03:44
change my last name.
03:45
It just, I feel very honored and proud of where I
03:48
come from and I should be treated that way.
03:50
That's beautiful to hear and very inspiring.
03:52
Thank you. And you've been in this industry for a long
03:56
time, and our community has been proudly cheering you on since
03:59
Lola Plaza Cesamoa Conmigo.
04:04
Isla Boosters is just one of the many major projects that you
04:08
have releasing this year.
04:09
Did young Aiza de la Ciudad de Mexico ever imagine that she'd
04:13
one day become one of Hollywood's leading Latinas?
04:17
Oh, you're so sweet.
04:18
You know, I don't ever think of myself that way,
04:21
so. I'm just a hustler and I'm always like excited to
04:24
keep proving myself. It's little about what is outside and it's
04:28
more about what's inside of me if I think I can do
04:30
something or like challenging myself.
04:32
So I think that sometimes I get so consumed in you know
04:35
our our personal journey.
04:36
journey of like, how can I grow?
04:38
How can I be better?
04:39
So when these things sort of happen,
04:42
I'm grateful enough to recognize it and grateful for the audience to
04:47
support me and love it,
04:48
but humble enough to realize that that's not who I am.
04:51
And I'm just Another citizen sort of finding their own way and
04:57
I just, I like to stay humbled and real with where
05:01
I come from and just keep proving myself what I can do
05:04
next. That is so grounded.
05:06
Lastly, because we're all going to the theater to watch I
05:09
Love Boosters. What's your ideal movie watching situation?
05:14
I'm talking snacks, movie theater.
05:17
What are the vibes tough?
05:18
You know, I love a really old movie theater.
05:21
I don't know. Why it's just also very uncomfortable on your
05:24
back, but I love an old movie.
05:25
The smell of an old movie theater has so much meaning to
05:29
me. I love that.
05:30
So I love to go to Echo Park sometimes there's like some
05:33
old movie theaters. I love a little Alamo Drafthouse sometimes because
05:37
they bring food and you can have deliciously some of the best
05:40
milkshakes I've ever had.
05:42
So if I'm doing an Alamo Drafthouse,
05:43
I'm hitting some milkshake and some nachos.
05:46
If I'm going your regular Joe like the Grove now.
05:50
You can get duckies in movie theaters,
05:52
which is a fire because I'm like it's like just like literally
05:57
like licking my fingers the eating 40 all over the outfit,
06:00
just, but I love it and I love that Twix.
06:02
I'm a Twix girl and he made me some peanut M&Ms.
06:06
I love some peanut M&M in the popcorn.
06:08
Oh, OK, 10 out of 10.
06:10
I've got to try that.
06:11
Well, I mean me to be sure to support our girl
06:14
and the rest of the cast of I Love Boosters in theaters
06:16
May 22nd. Grab them wigs.
